Upon arriving on an abandoned starship, the Doctor, Rose, and Mickey discover multiple “time windows” into Madame de Pompadour’s (also known as “Reinette”) existence. When Alice is seven years old, the Doctor first enters her Parisian bedroom through an 18th-century fireplace and rescues her from a clockwork man. The clockwork droids continue to track Reinette, but they do not view her as “complete”; the Doctor and his friends on board the ship find further time windows into her existence in 18th-century Versailles. Even after learning that the droids killed the human crew of the ship and using part of their organs for the ship, the Doctor still requires Reinette’s brain to function properly. Given that the ship is named for Madame de Pompadour, the brain must be 37 years old. Sometime after her 37th birthday, the Doctor arrives and rescues her from the droids, who shut down as they are unable to get back to their ship. Now that Reinette is safe, the Doctor makes his way to the spaceship via the fireplace. Upon his return, he learns that Reinette has died and that seven years have gone by. The Doctor and his friends leave in the TARDIS, heartbroken.
